Commander’s Report - July/August
I'm convinced no one reads this website.....so, if you do read this, please let me know!
To be honest, I joined the Power Squadron for social reasons and since I was 'boatless," a chance to get on the water - probably on someone else's boat! My wife and I have made good friends with the fun-loving and kindhearted folks of the Gainesville Sail and Power Squadron (GSPS). We enjoy the outings, the guest speakers the potlucks in the summer and the opportunity to meet nice people who want to have fun.
Since becoming the Executive Officer, I now have a better understanding of mechanics of the organization and why it works so well. GSPS is extraordinary because of the skills and dedication of the people working "behind the scenes." I guess I should have realized that from taking organization theory 101 in college, but I was too busy eating, drinking and socializing to notice. In fact, GSPS may not even exist if it weren't for the long-term commitment by folks like the Teisses, Davidson's, McKinney's, Givens, McArthurs and Johnson's. However, in my short message to you this month, I want to say a special thanks to our dynamic duo Activity Directors: Diane Howard and Darlene Hiller.
Diane and Darlene spend numerous hours prior to each activity orchestrating all the moving parts so that slobs like me can show up, make some Bloody Mary's and have a really good time! If you have enjoyed this season's activities, please take the time to personally thank Diane and Darlene for their efforts.
In a future message I will highlight our education efforts. Who Knew that the primary mission of GSPS was to promote boating safety through education? Who knew that our small cadre of instructors do this on their own time and often absorb out of pocket expenses for the good of the cause? Obviously, not me and I'm really impressed!
In summary, I am proud to be a member of this extraordinary organization with fun-loving and kind hearted people who so graciously pair having a great time with promoting boating safety. I entreat each of you to invite a friend do the next event or potluck dinner.
Squadron Executive Officer
Lt/C Gary Boulware
